So you need a new computer, but…

Say you want a new computer, but you don't want a Windows machine because you're afraid of viruses and don't know your way around computers too well. So you look at Macs, but are appalled by the price tag. What do you do? Buy a computer with Ubuntu Linux as the operating system. Why? Let me list the reasons:
  • Ubuntu is completely free.
  • Ubuntu has a Mac-like interface.
  • Viruses are essentially unheard of on Ubuntu systems.
  • Ubuntu has thousands of free applications written for it.
  • Ubuntu makes it hard to hurt yourself if you don't know what you're doing.
"But I need Microsoft Word!", you cry. Fear not, for Ubuntu comes with OpenOffice — a free office suite that is very comparable to Microsoft Office (and easier to use than their more recent versions in my opinion). Also, OpenOffice can open and save files in Microsoft Office's formats (.doc, etc.) as well as export files to .pdf format. So if you're looking for a computer to do webbrowsing, word processing, and maybe a little spreadsheeting, then Ubuntu is the operating system for you.

If Ubuntu is so great, why doesn't everyone use it? Well for one thing, there are a great many idiots out there who believe that if something costs more, it must be worth more. This is simply not the case; there are a number of free alternatives for many things that are as good or better than the leading pay-for equivalents. Also, people are simply afraid of what they're not familiar with. They wrongly believe that since Linux is popular with nerds, it must be difficult to use.

Where do you get a computer with Ubuntu on it? For a while now, Dell has been selling a number of systems with Ubuntu as the operating system. They of course pass down the savings directly to you. There are other lesser known companies that sell Ubuntu systems, though personally I would go with a well known company.

Welcome to Zombie-Tech

As this is my first post, I'd like to outline what I plan to do with this blog. My goal is to write a series of technical articles with the purpose of better informing my readers about various subjects, while while maintaining a simplistic and easy-to-read approach. These articles will be separated into categories based on the type of article they are, regardless of what subject they cover. These types will be as following:
  • The Open Source Option — A series on free alternatives to popular items of interest.
  • How To Survive — A series on how to make it through a variety of tough situations.
  • The Best Choice — A series that compares like products and helps you choose which one is best for you.
  • When Robots Rule — A series that discusses things that we'll have in the future when robots are ruling the earth, but we should have now.
Well, that about sums it up. Hope you enjoy my crazy shenanigans.
